The revelation of an ancient Castaka secret to save Othon von Salza's life ignites a great war. When it finally ends, the imperial couple, impressed by Othon's feats, negotiates with him a planet so he can live with his son, the other survivor of the battle, and a horse to bring joy back to the boy, who had lost the use of his legs. The arrival of pirates on the planet, however, brings enormous tragedy and culminates in Othon's consolidation as the ruthless mercenary who carries the title of Metabaron!
